該唱片于1982年2月13日和14日在瑞士斯德哥爾摩的阿道夫?佛瑞德日科斯（Adolf Fredriks）的教堂現場錄制而成。
清唱劇《彌賽亞》是巴洛克時期德國偉大的作曲家亨德爾最為著名的作品，作于1742年。
“彌賽亞”一詞源于希伯萊語，意為“受膏者”（古猶太人封立君王、祭祀時，常舉行在受封者頭上敷膏油的儀式）。后被基督教用于
對救世主耶穌的稱呼。
全劇分三部分，共有序曲、詠嘆調、重唱、合唱、間奏等57首分曲。第一部分敘述圣嬰耶穌的誕生；第二部分是關于耶穌為拯救人類，
四處傳播福音以及受難而被釘死于十字架上的經歷；第三部分則是耶穌顯圣復活的故事和贊美詩。這是亨德爾少數完全表現宗教內容的
作品中最出色的一部，實際上其中對音樂的戲劇性和人性的宣傳遠勝于對宗教的虔誠感情。
全劇為主調和聲音樂風格，以旋律優美、和聲洗練見長。西西里民間樂器風笛的使用在當時是大膽而新穎的。由于其中不少分曲具有很
高的技術訓練價值和藝術性，至今仍在音樂會和聲學教學中被廣泛采用。
整個作品經典迭出，美不勝收。其中“哈里路亞”一段，則更是以其震撼的氣勢，洗練而悠長的旋律，以及教堂圣歌的莊重典雅，而成
為傳世佳作。
