The Reichas of Bohemia were very much a part of the busy music world of the late-eighteenth century. Antonín took in all that this world had to offer as a flautist under his uncle Josef in the Electorate of Cologne Orchestra in Bonn and as a friend of a young violist by the name of Ludwig van Beethoven, with whom he later received instructions in theory from Christian Gottlob Neefe.
We all know of Beethoven, his nine Symphonies, and his legendary stubbornness, and the same sort of refreshing uncompromisingness awaits us in Reicha's symphonic music. If he wanted to compose an overture in 5/8 time, he did it - no matter if it made his 1820-audiences dizzy!
